How to increase natural light in your room

Nothing compares to having the feel of sunshine on your face after you have faced nothing but cold and dreary weather. If you are able to harness that light and really bring it into your home, then you will be able to improve your health while also saving on energy. There are also many benefits of having more natural light in your home, as it’s a key feature and most buyers are willing to pay for it.

Add Mirrors

You may have heard that if you add a mirror to your room then you can make your entire space look bigger. Mirrors and shiny objects are able to reflect light back into the room too, so make sure that you add decorative wall mirrors, furniture with chrome or mirrored accents and silver photo frames.  If you do this then you will soon find that you can easily make a huge difference and that you can also rocket your home’s appeal in general. If you want to take things to that next level, then window cleaning is vital. When you clean your windows, you will soon find that more light comes in overall.

Choose the Right Colour Palette

You may remember from art class, that colour has the ability to either absorb or reflect light. Darker shades can absorb light too, so if you have a dark blue room that has a lot of windows then this will appear dreary when compared to a room which is white or light tan in colour. Lighter colours can also act as a mirror to bounce a lot of light around the room too. It’s vital that you don’t forget about the ceiling. If you paint your ceiling a couple of shades lighter than your walls then you can make your rooms feel much taller and brighter. Use a semi-gloss paint if you want to enhance the reflective properties of your home.

Opt for light-colored flooring

When a space is in need of additional light, it’s best to choose light wood flooring to brighten up the room. Light stains are also perfect for high-traffic areas since they’re better at masking scratches.

Bring in New Furniture

If you are in the market for some new upholstered furniture then you need to make sure that you choose a light colour. This is especially the case if it is a large piece of furniture, such as a sofa. If you can add brighter or much richer colours or accent pieces then this will compliment your space far more than you realise, and you may even find that you can make your home feel way more warm and welcome as a result.

Paint your Overhangs

Your home’s eaves or overhangs can add some protection when the bad weather decides to strike but if you have a nice sunny day then this could act as a deterrent for letting the light shine through. If you want to make sure that your natural light is boosted in every single room, then it is helpful to paint your overhangs in white or even cover them in vinyl. Don’t worry about matching some of the other trims in your home because the eaves are angled towards your home and therefore won’t conflict.

Trim trees that block light from windows

This one is quite obvious, but often overlooked. If light can’t reach your window, it certainly won’t brighten your room. Make sure any bushes or trees cushioning your windows are trimmed regularly, and opt for shorter shrubs that offer a pleasant view from the window without blocking all the sunlight.
