CashewMilk & Oreo Cookie Milkshake

For those of you who’ve been regular readers of my blog, you know that I am a fan of SILK, and though it took me years to try their Soy Milk, I was instantly interested in their Almond Milk and Coconut Milk offerings. But now their latest addition, the rich and creamy SILK Cashew Milk has completely bowled me over! I always knew that dairy-free, gluten-free milk was a great option for people with lactose-intolerance, or similar other gluten issues. I also knew that milk derived from nuts is healthier and richer in omega-6 acids, but what I was skeptical about was the taste. Being an ardent milk fan who loves to drink at least 3 cups of milk a day, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the SILK Cashew Milk was very comparable to regular Skim milk in terms of taste and texture, in fact, it was creamier than skim milk, and at just 60 calories per serving, it has 25% fewer calories than skim milk, not to mention the added calcium that comes with it. And their unsweetened version only has 25 calories per 8oz cup, so for all the weight-watchers out there, this is perfect!

When I received a package from SILK to try their new Cashew Milk, the first thing I did was pour myself a cup and drank it bottoms-up:) Then I tried giving it to my daughter, and even though she commented that it was tasting different than her glass of whole milk, she still ended up finishing her portion. Now it was time to don the chef hat and put the milk to a real recipe test. I would not be bale to pass a verdict unless I had successfully made a milkshake out of it that was acceptable to my entire family, including the 18-month old!

To keep it palatable for the first experiment, I chose to pair it with Oreos, a safe bet with any kid on the block. I also threw in some soaked cashew nuts into the blender to make it extra-creamy, just like a real milkshake. Finally, a dollop of whipped cream on the top right before serving, and I was happy to see that the glasses ran empty in less than a couple minutes. In fact, it looked so delicious my daughter could hardly wait for me to take the pictures before gulping it all down!

  • 4 Oreo cookies
  • a few cubes of ice
  • whipped cream to top
Directions
  1. Blend the soaked cashews to make a smooth paste.
  2. Then mix the SILK Cashew Milk, Oreos and ice and make a thick milkshake
  3. Pour it in 2 glasses, top with some whipped cream, and serve chilled

All in all, it was a successful experiment, and I personally think I like Cashew milk more than SILK’s previous offerings. It is definitely more creamier than others, and can easily be incorporated into any recipe. What I liked the most about it was that it didn’t have any residual taste, and didn’t really alter the taste of the recipe that it went into. Of course, it’s not the same as regular milk, but coming from nuts that are themselves rich and creamy, this is the best SILK offering ever!
