Green Smoothie Recipe

Believe it or not, but the one most significant change that I noticed in myself after becoming a Mom, is how much more attention I pay to the kind and quality of food I cook, and how I read the labels for every product that I buy, making sure I am feeding a healthy, balanced and nutritious meal to my toddler! I never really did that, except when I was on a whimsical weight-loss spree to quickly shed some pounds, and counted every calorie that went into my system, but now, it has just become a lifestyle change for me and my family, that I am proud to embrace.

I first came across a Green Smoothie on the Daily Bite blog, and since then, I have become a fan. [Photo by wildtofu]. What you see below, is just one adaptation of this recipe, but you can have as many variations as your creativity and taste-buds permit! Its pretty, its healthy and its delicious – what more do you need from a recipe?!

So what exactly is a Green Smoothie? Besides being green in color, as the name suggests, this is a smoothie that uses all raw ingredients, pretty much like any other smoothie recipe, however, the ideal combination would be a bunch of leafy greens, at least one fruit, one vegetable (like cucumber or celery) and no artificial sweeteners or additives. So it is Green, meaning unadulterated and pristine, in the true sense. And anything that fits this description, will definitely be a boon for our body, right?

Green Smoothie Recipe
Serves: 2
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 2 mins

Ingredients
1/2 medium ripe banana
1/2 cup frozen mango or pineapple chunks
1 cup mild greens such as baby spinach
1 two-inch piece cucumber, peeled or unpeeled
1 ripe avocado pulp
6 raw almonds, soaked in water
1/4 cup unsweetened coconut milk
1/4 cup water (or ice cubes)
1 tsp turbinado (raw sugar, optional for kids)

Method
As you can probably guess, there’s nothing much to this recipe then simply using a blender. If you have a Vita-Mix, it would be easy to create these smoothies more often, especially if you want to blend hard fruits or veggies like carrots or beets. Otherwise, a high-speed blender will suffice.

Combine all ingredients in a mixer and and blend on high until smooth and creamy.

Garnish with some celery or mint sprigs, if you like. Serve immediately.
