How to do a Facial at Home

These days, life has become so hectic for women that its hard to find time or energy to take care of your skin! Yes, you might squeeze in a facial visit to your beautician once every 2 months, but that is not enough. Not everyone is blessed with flawless skin like Aishwarya Rai or Cindy Crawford, but that does not mean we can’t look beautiful too. If you want a healthy, glowing skin, you need a bit more commitment, and just a bit of planning. 5-Step Facial at Home

Cleansing Using a mild soap or cleanser, clean your face thoroughly. Work the cleanser/soap in for a minute or so, then rinse with a warm, wet washcloth.

Scrubbing
Use a very fine scrub, fruit or oatmeal-based; you could even use some oatmeal mixed with yogurt or milk, or baking soda mixed with water, and use it as a scrub. Gently go over your face, avoiding the eye area, and focusing more on your oily areas like the nose or T-zone. Household baking soda mixed with water into a paste works well. Rinse with a warm, wet washcloth.

Steaming
At-home steamers work great, and you should invest in one if you want to get home facials every month. Otherwise, just fill the sink up with very hot water, then put your face over it and cover up with a towel for about five minutes. Try to block any openings so steam won’t escape. You may have to drain and re-fill the sink again for continued steaming. Or run the shower on Hot for 3 minutes, then stand in the shower to get a steam effect. This opens up your pores for the next step.

Blackhead Removal
Use a blackhead extractor or one of those Biore pore strips that you can stick on your nose, and gently remove blackheads or whiteheads. Use very gentle pressure, so as not to damage your skin.

Face Mask
Depending on your skin type, you can use a homemade facial mask, or use one that you trust from a drugstore. However, banana, avocado or Multani Mitti mixed with Rose water (clay-based mask) are safe options to try at home. Apply generously, not too close to the eyes, and relax for 15-20 minutes. Take this time to take a short nap. Turn on some soft music, light a scented candle, apply 2 cotton-balls dipped in milk on your eyes, and take some well-deserved time off as the face mask works its magic on your skin:) For a list of face masks based on skin type, check out this post on homemade fruit facial masks.

Once you are done, wash your face with warm water or a wet cloth, then pat dry and apply a layer of moisturizer. Follow this routine and you will notice a glow in your skin that will keep you motivated. A Facial at home is not as hard or time-consuming as one might think. Just put aside an hour every month to take care of your skin, and you’ll feel fresh and young, even in your 60’s!!

  1. Wow, I didn't know that we can do our own scrubbing mixture from fruits as well. I only thought fruits can be used as face masks. I use strawberry and yogurt mask while my mum uses banana mask. I also use Biore pore strips but it is painful when removing it. Thanks for your useful post!
